Analysis of the Horary Question:

"Will This Relationship Last?"

When love begins to sicken and decay,
It useth an enforced ceremony.
There are no tricks in plain and simple faith.
Julius Caesar
Act IV, Scene 2
William Shakespeare

This week we take a break from Electional Astrology, Astrological Magic and Astrological Talismans and turn to traditional Horary Astrology. Horary astrology begins with the time of the birth of a question, rather than the birth of a person and judges the answer to the question from a chart of the time of its asking.
In this question the querent (person asking the question) asked, "Will This Relationship Last?" I received and understood the question on November 29, 2001, 12:15 pm, EST (+5) in Washington, D.C. 38 N 55, 77 W 03.
In this chart Aquarius rises and it is the planetary hour of Saturn. As Saturn rules Aquarius the chart is radical and thus has indications of accuracy.
Chart produced by Solar Fire 5
Mars, the Lesser Malefic, is peregrine and conjunct the Ascendant, afflicting the querent (person asking the question). Mars is the natural significator of arguments and quarrels. William Lilly, Christian Astrology, page 66. We note also that the Ascendant is at 27 degrees of Aquarius an initial indication that the relationship is in its late stages.
As Aquarius rises the significator of the querent is Saturn, who is dignified by triplicity, but retrograde and conjunct the cusp of the 4th house. Saturn is the natural significator of solitude. Christian Astrology, page 588. The querent is also signified by the Moon, who as the fastest planet shows action. The Moon is well dignified in her exaltation, Taurus and in the 3rd house.
The quesited (person asked about) is signified by the ruler of the 7th house, the Sun, who is dignified by triplicity and conjunct the 10th house cusp. This is appropriate as the Sun is the natural significator of a man in a relationship question asked by a woman. Christian Astrology, page 304.
The key indication is the fact that the Sun, signifying the quesited, and Saturn, signifying the querent are mutually applying to an opposition without reception. This aspect is a strong indication that the relationship will end. Both the English astrologer William Lilly and the Italian astrologer Guido Bonatti indicate that it is rare for an opposition with reception to result in a positive result and, particularly with Saturn as a significator, if the relationship does continue the querent may well will wish that it had ended. Christian Astrology, 125; Bonatti, Liber Astronomiae, Bk. IV (Arhat ed.) page 15.
As additional indicators, we note that the Moon applies to an opposition with reception of Venus, the ruler of the malefic 8th house. Venus is in detriment in Scorpio and thus afflicted. Bonatti notes that even though the aspect is with reception, that since Venus is in detriment the relationship is not brought about by the applying aspect, but impeded and destroyed. Bonatti, Liber Astronomiae, Bk. IV (Arhat ed.) page 14. The next aspect of the Moon is an opposition to the Sun, significator of the quesited. This aspect is almost out of orb at 14 degrees.
Cupid
So we have several strong indications that the relationship will end in arguments and difficulties. The Ascendant is late and afflicted by Mars. Both the Moon and Saturn, significators of the querent, oppose the Sun, significator of the quesited. Saturn, natural significator of solitude is the significator of the querent.
Interestingly enough, the Sun, significator of the quesited, is fairly well dignified. Saturn, significator of the querent, is mixed in dignity, being both in triplicity and retrograde. It may well be that the querent has mixed feelings about the relationship.
So it appears the relationship will not last, or if it does, the querent will wish it hadn't. Timing is always tricky, but we will look to the opposition of Saturn and the Sun, which is 4.2 degrees from perfection. These planets are in common signs (weeks or months) in a angular house (days) giving us about 4 weeks. This will probably be speeded up by the fact that the aspect is one of mutual application.
The other possible timing indicator is the opposition of the Moon and the Sun which is 14 degrees from perfection. The Moon is in a fixed sign (years) in a cadent house (years) while the Sun is in a common sign (weeks or months) in a angular house (days). This would tend to indicate 14 months.
Thus it looks as if there will be major difficulties in about a month. This may or may not result in a final break-up of the relationship. If the relationship persists beyond this point, which is possible given the Moon/Sun opposition and the fact that the Moon is in a fixed sign, then the final break-up would be in about 14 months. If the relationship persists this long, the querent may wish that it had ended earlier.
With such strong negative indications it may not be possible to alter the outcome with Love Talismans or other forms of Astrological Magic. Here is more information on the astrology of Sex, Love & Marriage.
