Ptolemy says that the stars in the tail of Capricorn are the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. Tetrabiblos, Bk. I, ch. 9. We have an interesting split in our sources for the talismans of Deneb Algedi. Cornelius Agrippa says, "Under the tail of Capricorn they made the image of an Hart, or Goat, or of an angryman; it bestoweth prosperity, and increaseth wrath." Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Bk II, ch 47. Agrippa's source, however, Hermes on the 15 Fixed Stars says, "gives grace in causes, brings peace to houses in which it is, preserves its bearer always from harm and removes discords." The Book of Hermes on the 15 fixed stars, BM Bodleian MS. 52, ff. 44-47, Translated by B. Thomas. So in this case we bring in a tie breaker, Marsilio Ficino who follows Hermes on the 15 Fixed Stars and says, "They think is furthers favor in lawsuits, increases wealth and makes men and their homes safe." Three Books on Life Bk. III, ch 8. Hermes on the 15 Fixed Stars says of Deneb Algedi that its stone is chalcedony and herb marjoram. Sigil of Deneb Algedi Agrippa explains how to make fixed star talismans, "Now the manner of making these kinds of Rings, is this, viz. when any Star ascends fortunately, with the fortunate aspect, or conjunction of the Moon, we must take a stone, and Hearb that is under that Star, and make a Ring of the Metall that is sutable to this Star, and in it fasten the stone, putting the Hearb, or root under it; not omitting the inscriptions of images, names, and Characters, as also the proper suffumigations, but we shall speak more of these in another place, where we shall treat of Images, and Characters.
