Quit Smoking

The current chart is an election to quit smoking. It is also an excellent example of the applications of the principles set forth in Thabit Ibn Qurra's De Imaginibus which represents the most complex and powerful levels of astrological magic that have ever been historically achieved.
Thabit carefully instructs us to base our talismans on either our own natal chart, if we wish to affect ourselves, or on the natal chart of of the person we wish to affect. Of course, since talismans are based on elections, we can use these same principles for standard elections. In this example, the elector (person using the election) wish to quit smoking. Their Ascendant was 29 degrees of Scorpio, so we used that as the basis for the election. It certainly would be appropriate to make an quitting smoking talisman and do a ritual as well at this time.
In this type of election because we are seeking to remove an addiction or bad habit, we would want the Moon to be waning. In the Picatrix, a encyclopedic work of Arabic astrological magic, it states,

And if you find the Moon increasing in light then her strength and power is good and useful in all works to bring about increase and if you find the light [of the Moon] diminishing it is suitable and harmonious for all works in which you wish diminution.

Picatrix, Bk. II, ch.3, (translation by Christopher Warnock, Esq.)
In addition, we would also like to include Mars in the election. Nicolas Culpepper, in his English Physician, a famous herbal, states that tobacco is under the rulership of Mars. English Physician, page 240, available in the Renaissance Astrology CD Library.
Finally, because we seek to quit smoking, we will make use of separating aspects, which in Traditional Astrology, indicate things happening in the past or things we seek to get away from.

Chart produced by Solar Fire 5

The time chosen for the election is March 25, 2006 at 10:50 pm EST in Cleveland Park, a neighborhood of Washington, D.C. 38 N 55, 77 W 03.
At this time, 29 Scorpio, the natal Ascendant rises. The ruler of the 1st is Mars, who is dignified, albeit weakly, by face. The Moon separates from Mars, who is not only the significator of the elector, but also the natural ruler of tobacco, which he seeks to escape. In a fascinating bonus, the Moon also separates from Neptune, the natural ruler of addiction! The Moon is also appropriately waning.
