The Shams al-Ma'arif

Despite the current popularity of Picatrix the Shams Al-Ma'arif or the Sun of Wisdom is a much more widely known and used book of magic in the Arabic speaking world. Traditionally attributed to the 13th century Sufi and master of the esoteric science of Arabic letters Ahmad bin Ali Al-buni. While current scholarship has cast doubt on Al-Buni's authorship of the received version of the Shams Al-Ma'arif its influence on Arabic magic is vast. Like Picatrix the Shams al-Ma'arif is much more than simply a recipe book of talismans, which are typically secondary to its main purpose of elucidating esoteric knowledge and occult sciences as well as exemplifying Sufi wisdom.

The Shams al-Ma'arif combines magic squares, Arabic letter magic, Quranic verses and the names of Allah with astrological timing. Chapter 12 of the Shams al-Ma'arif goes into detail with regard to the spiritual significance and magical uses of the greatest name of Allah, represented by 7 esoteric symbols. In this translation of the portion of Chapter 12 dealing with the 7 esoteric symbols of the Greatest Name I have omitted the more extreme malefic uses of the Greatest Name. Those desiring to access these passages should find a copy of the Shams al-Ma'arif and do their own translations as I will not provide them.

SHAMS AL-MA'ARIF

Chapter 12: On the Supreme Name of Allah and the Hidden Derivations It Has

Page 146

You must know, Allah guide us!, that in the science of the Supreme Name reside virtues and effects physical. We will expose it to you so that you can see how many secrets reside in it, as well as the lights that Allah, exalted be he!, made visible in it, so that whoever studies it and understands its meanings and its wonders, since this Name cures diseases and pain, causes rapid recovery of health and represents invulnerable protection.

PECULIAR VIRTUES OF THE SUPREME NAME OF ALLAH

One of its peculiar virtues (jawāss) is that whoever writes it and puts it on the grave of a dead person, [he] is safe from the torment of the grave. Whoever carries it with him is under the protection of Allah, exalted be He! It represents a magnificent acceptance for those who go before kings and the powerful, for he is protected from them as Allah protects the sheep from the wolf. The bearer of this Name has divine Support and Help, so that he defeats everyone who confronts him. It is beneficial to nullify the effects of black magic (al-sirr), to free the bound one (al-ma‘qūd) and for the person whose imprisonment lengthens.

And it is very beneficial for epileptics, to make the demon (al-gūl) come out of the body. Who engraves on a silver seal the Supreme Name in the first hour of Friday [Venus hour] while fasting, when he wears the ring everyone who sees him will love him, will treat him kindly and will do what he needs. If you take the it to the governor (sultān), you will get from him whatever you want. Carry the [talisman with the Supreme Name] with him in his right hand when you go before the sultan and the same with the rest of the authorities; and if you go into combat with him, wear the ring on the left hand. If the talisman is left in an abandoned place its population will fill. If an unmarried woman takes it with her, she marries quickly. If carried by someone who is traveling and afraid of bandits, he will be safe from everything he fears. And if this Supreme Name is hung on a banner, those troops and that army that carry the banner will obtain victory over their enemies, Allah willing, may he be exalted!

SECTION ABOUT THE MAGIC SQUARE OF THE SUPREME NAME

One of the kings of the Muslims was besieging one of the cities of the infidels for seven years, so the Muslims built another city around the besieged city so they could defeat the besieged city. Then one of the king's closest men mentioned that nearby was a man known for his asceticism, his fear of Allah, and his erudition, having become famous for it. [The king] appeared before him, and having received him with hospitality and generosity, said the man asking him: "What do you need?" The king told him the reason he brought him and what the Muslims had achieved so far in the siege of that city. Then the king said: "What we want is your support through blessed invocations."

[That man said]: When I heard the king's words and what brought him to me, I was forced to solve his problem. Then I took a piece of paper on which the Supreme Name was written and then folded it harmoniously [in a square]. I handed it to him and said: put it at the forefront of your troops and advance with the Muslims towards the city, for truly Allah, exalted be He!, will give you victory against your enemies. The king took it and returned to his troops.

The next morning the king ordered the Muslims to march against the city, and having placed the square with the Supreme Name on the banner of the front of the army as instructed, he marched against the infidels. And after only a brief moment Allah granted victory to the Muslims and brought about the defeat of the infidels, who took the city and obtained magnificent booty. [The king] sent me part of the loot, but I did not accept any of it and told them: "distribute it among the poor and the needy", after having ordered them to preserve the noble square and not to show it to anyone who was not worthy of it.

Another of the peculiar virtues of him [of this square] that have been mentioned is that a man passed by Abū Ja‘far al-Mansūr, the caliph, who ordered that he be killed. When the man realized the situation, he prepared a paper on which this noble square of the Supreme Name was written. The man was brought before the caliph, who ordered the executioner to behead him. The executioner wanted to do what the caliph ordered, but his hand could not hold the sword. The caliph ordered [the decapitation] by a second and a third executioner, but the sword did not cut the man. So the caliph said: "Search him!" They searched him and found that piece of paper with him on which he was this noble square of the Supreme Name. The caliph released him, ordered that seven thousand dirham be given to him and ordered that he be write this noble magic square of the Supreme Name. We have mentioned only part of the virtues [of the Supreme Name]. Whoever honors the signs of Allah, exalted be he!, and his names, they will honor him and Allah will honor him with enormous generosity.

SECTION ON THE SEAL OF THE SUPREME NAME

I have to give you a warning, brothers and seekers of Wisdom, about the [virtue of] Supreme Name of Allah: whoever knows it and acts with it, is among those worthy of obtaining the succession (al-jilāfa) of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and save him! And to whom Allah has granted the grace of this magic square, he will preserve it from the evil ones, he will not dispose of it in reprehensible matters, he will focus his efforts on preserving it and will perfume it with musk, perfume and camphor. Anyone who is unclean will not carry it with them, and they will not enter the latrines with it, if possible. It will protect from the pagans and will be kept well until the time when it is needed, for in this way you will obtain its blessing, Allah willing, exalted be he!

Whoever writes them [the letters that compose it] and has dealings with fools, or grants it to someone who is not worthy of it, he will have the curse of Allah, of the angels and of all people, because these seven letters were written on the door of the Ka‘aba. And they have angels responsible for them and in charge of these Names, and they are the servants of his act and of everything that is in the revealed books that proceeds of them, so they are very important. If you want these spirits to take care of some matter like bringing a friend of yours into your presence, or keeping an enemy away from you, since these Names accomplish seventy-two works according to the number of angels, so that for each work there is an angel in charge of it who will appear before you. And these Names assist in the discovery of the lost objects, treasures and the buried objects, because they have an enormous secret that cannot be found and is uncountable.

If you want to use them for what we just mentioned, then write them with saffron and water of roses, hang them on the neck of a white rooster and release it in the place where the treasure is believed to be, because in the place where the rooster stops and digs with its legs - and in another version, in the place that the rooster crows-, there is the buried or hidden object.

If you want to use them to destroy and devastate castles, fortresses and other places, then engrave the seal of good in wax, and on the other side engrave the seal of evil. Then bury it under the threshold from the door and water it with water from the bathroom drain. If you want to use them to quickly march from one region (balad) to another, then you will take a sparrow according of the sex corresponding to whoever you want to move quickly from one place to another: if the job is for a man, then the sparrow will be male, and if the job is for a woman, the sparrow will be female. You will draw the seal on bird skin parchment along with the name of the person who is the object of the work and the name of his mother. Then you will tie it to the sparrow's leg with a yellow thread and release it with your left hand throwing it from behind your back. And you will say when you release it: "Make So-and-so son of So-and-so flee from the place where he is to a far place, by the right of these Names."

page 149

It is also very useful to [an enemy] move and change locations if you write the seal of evil in a sheet. Then you will wash it with water from the bathroom drain and spread the water in the place where you want. Do this at the beginning of the night, at an ominous hour, and having already stopped at the place of the person who is the object of the work. And you will say as you spread the water: Oh angels, servants of these Names, take charge of keeping So-and-so son of So-and-so away, ﴾And it dawned, and only his dwellings could be seen﴿ [Noble Quran xlvi:24] -and use further verses equivalent to this in the Quran. Hayā al-wa¬ā al-‘ajal al-sā‘at.

[Excessively malefic talisman use omitted]

If you want to use it to prevent ships from setting sail, or from sinking if they set sail, then he writes the seal in a wooden cup [and dilute it] with the water from the bathroom drain and water from the sea in which it is boat. Then he takes some water in your mouth and spits it on the ship, for he truly They will batten down her hatches and she will never be able to sail.

It is said that Calif al-Ma'mūm, when he wanted to have fun [with the boats that were] on the Tigris, He would draw the seal at its appropriate time and hang it in the air with a white silk thread in a high place and then Allah, exalted be He!, raised the waves on all sides until [the ships] were about to sink. Knowing that it was a product of the caliph's works, they implored him for help and in this way he had fun at their expense.

If you want to [use] them to remove the cause of a disease from the body (al-‘ārid), put the seal on the forehead of the affected person and recite the spell over him, because he will really recover, if Allah, exalted be He!, so wishes.

If you want to use them to free a prisoner, draw the seal [and put it on] some dirt from a cemetery. Then give it to the prisoner, [he will insert the seal] through the neck [of his garment] and take it out through his sleeve, and then do the opposite. All this after reciting the spell, because the prisoner will be released immediately, Allah willing.

And if you want to operate with it to attract a person, draw the seal on [an object owned by the person] or draw it on clean white paper. You fumigate it with the nails of the spirit [herb] (azfār al ŷann) after writing the name of the desired person and the name of his mother. Then you will hang it in the air, and indeed the person targeted will come before you, even if he is chained.

Page 150

[Excessively malefic talismanic use omitted]

And the blessing of this noble and sublime seal lies in the fact that no one knows how to read it in Arabic, except whoever Allah wants, may He be exalted! Try to understand, because this seal has magnificent virtues, which we have summarized so as not to stimulate imagination of the scholar and thus dwell on its interpretation and meaning. Who invokes the [Supreme Name] the manifestations take place by the grace of Allah, exalted be He! Have you not heard the words of ‘Alī?, May Allah be pleased with him! For he certainly has said: "The Qur'an has a manifest and a hidden part, and this blessed seal has a hidden and manifest part: the manifest part is its visible form, and the hidden part is its reading in the Arabic language."

And returning to what we had as the object of discussion, I will give you a warning, oh brothers and sisters, knowers of Wisdom!, about the Supreme Name of Allah: whoever knows it and acts according to it shall be found among those worthy of obtaining the succession (al-jilāfa) of the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless and save him!

This seal has seventy-two provisions and seventy-two angels, [and if you pronounce the Name the angels, they appear before You]. This will take place on Friday night at the end of the last prayer, and [those angels] are servants of the upper and lower worlds. Use them for your needs. If you honor this Name, the servant angels will honor you and everything you ask for will be fulfilled.

Avoid wine, fornication, eating what is forbidden and violating the precepts of religion, because if you If you distance yourself from what I forbid, you will find prosperity in all your affairs. And if you blow on a pot boiling [after invoking said angels], its boiling will decrease. So be aware of the power of these noble Names, and hide them from fools and those who are not worthy of them.

If you want to attract the absent person, even if he or she is a month's [journey] away, draw the seal on a piece of paper and write next to it ( For the sky and the one who comes at night! ) [Noble Quran, lxxxvi:1] with the letters separated. After you will hang the sheet [with the seal] in the direction of the person who is the object of the work. The sheet should be hung in a harmonious hour for the moon, in which it is in a zodiac sign that corresponds to the element air. You will perfume it at the time of making it with the well-known jalapa incense. Then you will do the spell that was mentioned twenty-one times, because then the person will come even if he is chained

Page 151

[Excessively malefic talisman uses omitted]

If you want to deprive whoever you want of sleep, make a figure with hard wax. Then write the seal on a knife, on the handle and the blade, and you will nail it [on the figure, which you will have sewn] on the purse (dikkat) of your pants. Then you will hang the pants with one leg above and another below. Tthe person targeted will not sleep while the pants continue to hang.

[Excessively malefic talisman use omitted]

And if you want [to use it] for love and sympathy, draw the seal on a glass cup with musk, saffron and rose water, write the name of the person requested and the name of their mother, and, [after washing the written seal with water], if you are able to give her that water to drink, she will not be able to separate herself from you. If you are not able to give her a drink, splash the water on her clothes, as this will also be effective, and she will not be able to separate herself from you even for a moment.

[Excessively malefic talisman use omitted]

Page 152

And if you desire reconciliation between a woman and her husband, engrave the seal on a wedding candle and make two figures from it, placing her faces facing each other. You will put in the mouth of each image a little amber, you will recite the incantation over them twenty-one times and you will place [the figures] under their her heads [under her bed], because then the two of them will love each other and be reconciled, taking place between both perpetual love.

And if you want to gain respect among the people, trace the seal with musk, saffron, musk and rose water. Then you will wash the seal [with water] and put the water next to you in a bottle. And if you want to be received by some important person, take a little [of that water] and spread it on your face, because everyone who sees you will respect you, will consider you an important person and will humble themselves before you. This way you will get good acceptance from all people.

SEAL OF THE SUPREME NAME FOR GOOD AND EVIL

This is the form of the seal of good and the seal of evil:

[Seal of Good]

shams al ma arif great name seal of good

[Seal of Evil]

shams al ma arif great name seal of good

And I found in another version of an ancient book that these Names and letters that I have shown you, Shaykh Muhammad Qanbarīs said in the Sālihiyya of Damascus that he found this seal engraved on the minbar of the Sufi mosque, and this was the image:

shams al ma arif great name seal of good

SEAL SPELL

This is the aforementioned spell with which all the aforementioned works are completed, and it is to conjure higher and lower spirits. You will say:

"Samjyāl -2 times-, Sadjyāl -2 times-, Isrāfīl, Bakryāl -2 times-, Sajarmyāl -2 times-, Mītatrūn, Ŷibrīl. Obey, oh servants of these blessed ones names, in such and such a matter", and you will name what you want of good and evil from among those works that we have mentioned. These Names will be available in all works related to this blessed seal of magnificent power. Allah tells the truth and shows the way.

QASĪDA OF THE SUPREME NAME

And you must know, brother, Allah help us to obey him and understand his secrets!, that I have included a qasīda by Imām ‘Alī, May Allah be pleased with him!, which he composed on the Supreme Name, and this is the blessed and famous qasīda:

It begins with Bismi-Llāh, with which my spirit is guided towards the revelation of the secrets that are hidden in it.

Bāj, Ahūj, oh my Allah, Muhawjā O Jaljalūt, who adorns yourself with the answer.
Pour out a brilliant emanation from the Lights
upon me, and give life to the death of my heart, Badaydagat.
May the life of the heart be elevated from that which contaminates it,
by the Subsistent that erects the secret that is in it, shining
upon me a flash of the rays of His light
Hit my face with a glow that shines.

Cover me with solemnity and glory.
Remove the hand of enemies from me, Bataytagat.
Protect me from every enemy and envious

Make the hearts of all the worlds in harmony with me, and make it accepted, Bašalmahat. Bless us, my Allah, in everything that is the product of our works. Undo the knots of difficulty, Yāyūh, by loosening.

Page 154

Fayāyūh, Yāyūh, O best Creator,
oh Who makes our livelihood grow by his very existence.
For You we repel enemies from all sides,
and for the Name we cast them to the ground one by one.
You are my hope, O my Allah, and my Lord.
Dissuade the bulk of the army if they intend to lead me astray.
Oh the most requested and the most generous granting
Oh the most awaited by a generation (umma) that disappears
Light my star with the Name, bright and splendid
throughout eternity and days, O resplendent Light.
In You resides perpetuity and constant power for those who come
at the door of Your courtyard seeking refuge, and thus the darkness disappears.
Bāy, Awŷ, Ŷalmahūt, Ŷalālat
Jalīl, Ŷalā, Ŷalyūt, Hamā, Tamharŷat
Ni‘dādbarūm and Šamrāzāmarum
prominent brilliance and blessed matrix.
You light the lamp of lamps whose explanation is a secret,
You light the lamp of the lamps with a secret that is illuminated
with a light of high majesty and a covering that distances.
Qaddūs Barakūt, with this the fire is extinguished.
Byāh, Byāyāh, Namūh, Asālya,
Batamtām Mahrāš, for us you destroy the enemy.
Bahāl, Ahīl, Šala‘,Šala‘t, Šāla‘,
Tahī, Tahīb, Tīthūb, Tatahtīt.
Anūj, Batamlūj, Banrūj, Barajwā,
Batamlījyāyāt, Šamūj, you exalt yourself.
Bahram lyrics, elevated and exultant.
Through eternity and ages, Yāyūh, you wait
O Samajtā, O Šamajtā, you are Šalamjā,
oh ‘Ytlā, who releases the shuddering winds.

By Ta-ha, by Yā-sīn, by Tā-sīn, be for us. by Tā-sīn-mīm you attract happiness. By Kāf and Yā', 'Ayn, hā' and his sād. that contains what is enough for us against every threat. By Ahyā, Šarāhyā, Adunay, Asbā’ut. By Āl Šaday I conjure, then Taytagat. By Qāf and Nūn, then Hā’-mīm after them.

And in Sura al-dujān there is a secret that you have consolidated. Three staffs have been lined up behind a seal (jātim), being on them like a kind of arrows. And a blind and mutilated mīm, then a ladder in the middle of which are the two grooves [of wheels] After that four lines similar to finger tips, which allude to goods and sustenance together. An isolated hā’, then a curved wāw like a tube of a suction cup that bends secretly, and so its end is like its beginning, a seal of five points, that gathers [under it] the secret.

This is the Name of Allah, exalted be his power! and the Names of him, when the Creation took place, were named. This is the Name of Allah, be convinced, Oh ignorant! Do not doubt the burning that causes the spirit to perish, nor the shouting. He receives these noble Names hides them, for in them there are secrets through which there is no deception. In them resides the Covenant and the Alliance, the Promise and the Meeting.

Page 155

With musk and camphor is what it is perfumed with. If its bearer is among carnage, he escapes. He fearlessly visits kings. And if there is someone possessed by the jinn, it attacks the jinn. Pour boiling water and the body is separated. Face [anything] without fear and say [anything] without fear. It increases riches and the fruits of the harvest. Four of the names come from the end of the Torah, four from the Gospel of 'Īsà, son of Maryam, and five are from the Quran, and are its perfection. Eloquent for every creature, it silences. You will not fear any snake, nor will you see any scorpion, Nor will a snarling lion come near you. You will not be afraid of the sword, nor will you be afraid of the dagger.

You will not fear the furious air or the pestilent wind. Oh Repository of the Name whose power is excellent! With which you prevent all adversities and hardships. Bless, my Allah, morning and evening to the family and companions of those who recite them seeking Your favor, my Lord!, through his glory, and Your most beautiful Names, which they gather. And you should know that I will not mention the name of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and save him! for several reasons: One of them is that the name of the Messenger of Allah is a light, and if it were mentioned in this place would extinguish the light of these noble Names, since their light, Allah bless and save them!, comes from the Light of Allah, exalted be he! Understand that, and there is no harm in your reciting these blessed Names seeking the favor of Allah after prayer, because their problem will be resolved, with the permission of Allah, exalted be he! And the benefits lie in the convictions.

ON THE EXPLANATION OF THE POEM AND THE SEVEN SIGNS OF THE SEAL

This is the explanation of the Names in the words: "Three staffs have been lined up behind a seal, and above them they stand like spearheads....". [These Names] are arranged in unknown characters, and their equivalents are not mentioned in Arabic letters, nor their pronunciation in Arabic, nor are they transmitted orally. They only appear in books. As you see, for fear of the ignorant and those who do not fear Allah, be exalted! Below I will explain something about them so that you are aware of their virtue and their blessing. They are distributed in three books: the Torah, the Gospel and the Sublime Quran, and no one can pronunce in Arabic, since only Gnostics learn it orally from their teachers so that they are not repeatedly heard by the secondary people (ahl al-fadl). This is a secret of Allah, exalted be He!, for the people of the concern of him (ahl kašfi-hi), and whenever a Gnostic approaches the revelation of a secret, his teacher imposes on him the obligation to remain silent regarding it, and it is forbidden to profit [from the disclosure] of that secret.

As for those that come from the Torah, there are six letters:

shams al ma arif great name

Those that come from the Gospel are:

shams al ma arif great name

And those that come from the Sublime Quran are:

shams al ma arif great name

Understand that, hide it and be careful about disclosing it. Accept the advice, carry out this order, and You will succeed with the help of Allah, exalted be He!

I will now mention those of its peculiar virtues that I can explain, so far as my understanding reaches and encompasses my knowledge. I will ignore the disclosure of what includes the darkest aspects of the secrets, those that the Gnostics oppose [their disclosure], since Those rooted in science (al-rāsijūna) are well informed about them, just as their Lord said of them: "They say: we believe in it, everything comes from our Lord. But only those possessing judgment reflect." [Noble Quran iii:7]

Tnd as the noble angels made known, together with their news about the heavenly Kingdom and the earth, when "They said, Glory to You! We have no knowledge other than what You have taught us. You are the Omniscient, the Wise" [Noble Quran, ii:31] And Allah knows best.

Page 156

Regarding his words: "and our sign after the three [staffs] is healing." for every affliction that enters the body making it sick", means that when the person suffers from any of the internal diseases, such as colic (qawlanj), weakness of the liver and what resembles this, and when the doctors have given up on finding a cure and the wise men find themselves incapable of curing him, You will draw the three staffs and behind them the sign in this way that we recommend: . You will write it seven times in a glass container, you will expose it to the air for three nights and you will give it [after dissolving it with water] to the sick person to drink, because he will then recover, Allah willing, may He be exalted!

[Excessively malefic talisman uses omitted]

Regarding his words: "a ladder with which you ascend the path of the Most High", write a ladder with the form in which it appears [on the seal] on the nail of your left thumb, and you will go to visit the powerful in lawsuits and in the time of need, for you will have success over your adversaries under all circumstances. You will be respected, obeyed, listened to, influential and close to their wills, so they will solve all your problems.

And if it is written on a sheet of [...], it is put in the wax of a wedding candle and placed under the language, [whoever does it] will not fail to be happy, content and in a good place wherever he stops. The tongues of the people found there and the tongue of all evil people will be tied. Every warrior (mujahid) will sympathize with him and will like his company, and everyone who sees him, if Allah want, be praised and exalted!

Regarding his words: "And here are four who have lined up for our combat", refers to the extraction of these four [letters] of the alphabet (abjad) and their derivation fractionated, since whoever separates them, puts them on an iron plate and displays their numerical harmony, and carrying it with him he meets the enemy on the battlefield, for he will never be wounded, even if thrown between the spears and the arrows, and he will defeat his enemy. [It will be made] with the moon in DTRWF HSWS RDF, and should be worn on the hood after being scented with appropriate incense. Then the Name that is in the Surah of The Wall should be recited over it, and they are His words, exalted be he!: "Truly, your Lord is Allah. He has created the heavens and the earth in six days. He then sat on the Throne" [Noble Quran, vii:52] until the end of the verse. He should wear [the hood] and will then be safe in fearful situations and in the dark, and safe from dangerous people.

Page 157

Regarding his words: "You will thereby invoke the trees, coming hastily," It means that these four alif, if you extract their Arabic letters, and draw them in that order at night with the Moon is in a zodiac sign of the air element. You will write it on a piece of unfired ceramic with the Moon in favorable conjunction with Mercury. It should be perfumed with the incense known as "Aggregator of the spirits" (jāmi‘ al-arwā), which is called by the masters of spells (arbāb al-‘azā’im) "incense of al-karāŷīm". Then the person who is [at most] fifteen days journey away, and you will recite: "Wherever you are, Allah will gather you all. Allah is Powerful over all things" [Noble Quran, ii:147] "There will be only one shout and they will appear before Us" [Noble Quran xxxvi:52.] and "He is able to bring them all together whenever he wants" [Noble Quran, xlii:27] And you will call that person by the name by which he is generally known and is his nickname, and he will present himself immediately. Ask him what you want and solve your problem through it, and if If you want him to return to his place, repeat [suffumigation with] the incense and then recite this verse: "If they say to you: Return! do it" [Noble Quran xiv:28] -the verse until the end, and the verses that are in the Sublime Qur'an in that sense, and you will say: "Return, so-and-so son of so-and-so, to the place where you were and from which you departed, by the power of Whom you orders between the kāf and the nūn of "When he wants a thing, his Command consists of saying: Be!, and it is" [Noble Quran xxxvi:81] -until the end of the surah and this [last] is meant whenever we resolve the purpose of the matter we we search

Regarding his words: "And our sign for the good whose characteristics transform", refers to the best sign, which is the isolated hā’. If you write the repeated letter wāw after it, it is useful to solve problems, to facilitate the affairs and delivery of pregnant women, to tie the knot of the tongue of the one who quarrels with you, to annul the effects of black magic (al-sir), to free the one bound by witchcraft (ma‘qūd), the captive and the prisoner, and to provide sustenance, increase the blessing in the food and control the anger of the impetuous person. You will write that and carry it with you, seeing through it prodigious blessings.

[Excessively malefic talismanic use omitted]

Tegarding his words: "so that you may destroy all armies and "triumph", it means that you will extract this noble letter, transcribe it in Arabic and put it in a square of magical letters, inside a table, on the fourteenth day of the month with the Moon the fixed earth sign [Taurus], [free] from harmful influences, with the Sun rising and the Ascendant in a sign ruled by Jupiter. When all these factors are in place then it is the red sulfur and the supreme theriac.

He who takes this with him among the troops, he rises to victory and his rival is defeated and destroyed, because then the bearer of it does not cease to be under the protection and custody of Allah, Allah willing, exalted! be! And if you carry it with you and talk to Allah, your heart is strengthened, and complicated affairs are made easier, They quickly resolve matters as you ask, and it works in the world as you wish, and even the angels they obey. When the bearer walks, long distances are shortened for him and the ends of the journey rise for him on the earth until he sees what is far away as he sees what is near. The spirits communicate with him and inform him of that hidden aspects of invisible matters, and present among the prodigies of his blessing are what is indefinable and inexplicable.

And among its virtues is that if you write [in] a book, a paper or anything you want, and you cover it and put it under your head, its content is corrected and you will find in its margins a writing with all the refutation or demonstration you want, or else [you will find written] the legal authority (wilāya), the annulment, concession or action of any kind and by any person. This is a limit over which there is more limit, and an extreme after which there is no more extreme. Don't overuse it and have faith in its effect, for this is the promise of Allah that resides in preservation and concealment. I have limited myself to clarifying the symbols for you, and the meaning of the words lies in the allusions. Whoever fears Allah has a resource for everything and is provided for without limit. Allah says the Truth and He shows the way.

Next I will write again the Names, their invocation and the seal on which everything depends. that we have mentioned:

shams al ma arif great name seal of good

This is the blessed and noble invocation in which you will say: "My Allah, I ask you for the isolated hā’ of Your most Supreme Name, for the three staffs behind it, for the curved alif, for the blind mīm and mutilated, by the ladder, by the four that are like the palm of the hand without a wrist, by the hā' isolated and by prolonged wāw, the form of Your Noble and Supreme Name. I ask you to bless our lord Muhammad the number of times of each letter that the Pen has written, and that you resolve my necessity, which is such a thing," and you will mention it, your intention being right. This is the form of the aforementioned square:

shams al ma arif mansions

After this noble and blessed square follow seven of the letters of the Arabic alphabet, which are from the letters absent in the blessed surah Fātiha, each letter of them having one of the Names of Allah, exalted be it!, [which appear] after the letters mentioned, and whose explanation is found in the noble square, and they are as you can see:

shams al ma arif great name seal of good

Commentary

First, let me repeat my initial Commentary introduction as follows: Since I am not even fluent in Arabic, let alone a master of عِلْم الْحُرُوف Ilm al-Hurūf, the esoteric science of Arabic letters, there is much in the Shams Al-Ma'arif that is a mystery to me. Nevertheless, the light of wisdom shines very clearly through it. A basic component of the science of letters is the fact that in Arabic, the letters denote numbers and thus can be used numerologically. Many complex number calculations and letter correspondences are used. The key insight that is invisible to modern materialists is that this is not a symbolic system, rather there are fundamental underlying spiritual realities that the letters embody and are intiminately connected to. For Sufis versed in this art the realization dawns that the One has manifested reality and continues to sustain and control it through the divine letters and words. Thus the written symbols and spoken sounds that we take as words and letters are only a shadow of these divine letters and words. As it says in the Noble Quran, "When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is." Noble Quran, Surah 3 Ali-Imran, verse 47. The saying here is the divine manifestation of the appropriate name, i.e. its letters and words. These names, these interrelationships can therefore be used magically, but their true knowledge brings gnosis, direct awareness of reality and the One.

Here the Shams al-Ma'arif discusses in detail الاسم الأعظم Al-Ism al-Aʿẓam "the Greatest Name" of Allah. As we can see from the Shams al-Ma'arif this name is uniquely powerful, as it not only expresses, it is, the essence of the One as opposed to the 99 Beautiful Names which each express a differentiated aspect of Allah. This great power means that the Greatest Name is extensively used for magical purposes. As we can see from the Shams al-Ma'arif this power can be used for benefic or malefic purposes. Unusually some of the uses listed were so malefic that I broke my usual "non-censorship" policy and refused to provide a translation. Undoubtedly the foolish and those tempted by evil will feel the magnetism of the power of Iblis and desire to know in detail how to do evil with the Greatest Name. They will have to do without my assistance and explore for themselves that, "wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction." Matthew 3:17.

The magical use of the 7 symbols of the Greatest Name predates the Shams al-Ma'arif and it continues to be very prevalent in the Islamic world today. In Iran for example, yellow onyx rings with the Greatest Name 7 symbols are quite popular. They are known as Sharaf al Shams the nobility or glory of the Sun and often their creation is timed astrologically. The term Sharaf al Shams is also used in general for Greatest Name 7 symbols talismans. Similarly as in other chapters of the Shams al-Ma'arif astrological timing of the creation of talismans is found with the Greatest Name talismans. The Great Name talisman to bring a person to the user is made, "with the Moon is in a zodiac sign of the air element. You will write it on a piece of unfired ceramic with the Moon in favorable conjunction with Mercury."

Thus the pattern established elsewhere in the Shams al-Ma'arif, of spiritual power being usable for mundane purposes, even malefic purposes and the super charging of the creation of Sufi talismans with astrological timing, continues with the Greatest Name talismans. And thus I am pleased to be able to make Greatest Name talismans, astrologically timed, available at Renaissance Astrology.

Another practical though less talismanic use of the Greatest Name is attested through a hadith of the Prophet Muhammed, pbuh, which says "By Him in whose hands my soul rests, he has addressed Allah with His greatest name by which if He is called on, He responds; and if He is asked, He grants." But these practical applications of spiritual power should not lead us to forget their ultimate purpose and power. The ability to interact with, even on a limited basis, with the essence of the One, is a precious spiritual opportunity.

For the most part the focus of spiritual study of the Greatest Name of Allah has focused on a debate over which name is, in fact, the Greatest Name, with various different names or combinations of names put forth. Often Allah itself is posited, others say Ar Rahman, Ar Raheem "the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful" but a wide variety of names are suggested, depending on the source.

Greatest Name Modern Design

Here is a listing and explanation of the 7 names of Allah associated with a modern design of the 7 symbols of the Greatest Name by Muhammed Ajmal, the mage/jeweler who creates our talismans. (1) The name (Al-Faard) فرد is used in Arabic, Persian and Urdu languages with same meanings. The meanings of this word are ''individual, alone and single''. (2) ٱلْجَبَّارُ AL-JABBAR The Compeller, The Restorer (3) ٱلْشَّكُورُ ASH-SHAKOOR The Most Appreciative. (4) The name (Al-Thaabit) ثابت can be seen in Surah verse 24 and 27. The meaning of the name are ''fixed and firm''. (5) The name (Al-Zaheer) ظھیر is also a Quranic name that has appeared 7 times in different Surahs. The meaning of this word is ''Assistant, helper''. It has also appeared as ظھیرا in Surahs such as Surah Al Isra, Surah An Noor, Surah Al Furqan and others (6) ٱلْخَبِيرُ AL-KHABEER The Acquainted, the All-Aware (7) The other name (Al-Zakii) زکی has also appeared in the Holy Quran. In Surah Al Baqara verse 149 it has appeared in the form of یزکیھم which means ''exalted''. The word has appeared 24 times in different form in the different Surahs of Holy Quran. In majority of the verses it shows the meaning of ''Purer, Pure''.

Nevertheless, this is not the only "correct" listing or arrangement and in fact, debates about the choice of a specific name or names take place at a superficial level. I found this discussion of the Greatest name on the Sufi Tavern blog. It recounts the story of a man who wished to know the Greatest Name and asked the Iman Ja’far as-Saadiq. The Iman told him to do his ablutions first and as he was washing himself the Iman had his followers keep pushing the man back into the water until he feared for his life and called on Allah to save him. At this they immediately released the man, who then asked to know the Greatest Name. The Iman told him he already knew the name:

"No name of Allah, no matter how great they might be, can be useful, if you are invoking Him while your heart remains attached to another than Him. But if you invoke Him while you have lost all your desires and turn only to Him, then the name that you use, is the supreme name. You were thinking that we wanted to kill you and because of that in your heart you only trusted in the grace of Allah. In such a state every name that you invoke, is the supreme name."

Several points are apparent. First that the written or verbal names articulable and capable of intellectual understanding by humans are simply shadows of the true names. Next, the act of removing the self so that nothing other than the One remains, is the true Greatest Name. Further, the removal of the self is simply the recognition of its fictitiousness, its lack of true existence. Finally the power of the Greatest Name is the true consciousness that all is the One.
